El Potrero Chico

El Portrero Chico is part of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain chain. It is located near the town of Hidalgo, and is considered the center of world-class rock climbing in Mexico. Portrero’s unique limestone walls rise up to 2000’ high with over 500 established sport climbing routes.  The climbs are well equipped, which makes getting high off the ground relatively easy and retreats fairly straight forward. A few multi-pitch routes start at 5.8, with the majority in the 5.9 to 5.10 range.  This trip is designed for experienced rock climbers who can consistently climb 5.9 to 5.10 in the gym or on face routes outside.

We stay right outside the park in the finest accommodations with private room, bathroom and kitchen. In the evenings we’ll discover one of the nearby restaurants, enjoying traditional Mexican food and the local color.

Tentative Itinerary:

Day   1 Arrive in Monterrey in the afternoon, take the 45 minute taxi ride to Hidalgo, get situated and then spend the afternoon familiarizing ourselves on single pitch climbs.
Days 2-5 The next four days we’ll experience what El Potrero is known for; the multi-pitch sport routes; and they are fantastic!  We’ll do 4- to 12-pitch routes rated 5.8 to 5.11.  These will be based entirely on the weather and the group’s ability.
Day   6 After getting pumped for four and a half days it’s time to head home.  If you have an afternoon flight, we can get a few morning pitched in, otherwise this is a travel day.
