Single Pitch Instructor Assessment

This two day assessment involves demonstrating overall competency managing a top-rope/single pitch site, including the ability to demonstrate proper technical skills and teach various climbing topics.

For a complete exam overview go to page 21 and 22 of your SPI manual.

The SPI assessment can be taken directly following an SPI course, however it is highly recommended that candidates take time to practice various scenarios before an assessment. Highly experienced candidates can challenge the assessment without previously taking the course.

The Top Rope Site Manager program has been replaced by the SPI program. Current certified TRSM’s should take the SPI assessment for re-certification.

SPI Assessment covers the following topics:

To gain SPI Certification candidates must:

  • Successfully pass the SPI Assessment
  • Be a current member of the AMGA
  • Have a current First Aid Certification

TO ENROLL we need a climbing resume outlining the following prerequisites:

  • Successful completion of an AMGA SPI Course or AMGA TRSM Course
  • Traditionally led a minimum of 40 rock climbing routes. A large number of these should be at the 5.6 grade and hopefully on a variety of rock types
  • Comfortably able to led climb 5.6 traditional routes at the time of the assessment
  • Capable of comfortably climbing 5.8 while on a top rope
